Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa, where she teaches internal medicine residents, sees patients in a traumatic brain injury clinic, and conducts clinical trials. She is also a patient with a chronic progressive neurological disorder – secondary progressive multiple sclerosis – which confined her to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years. This Week In Neuroscience: New Study Isolates and Reverses Some Aging (In Mice)!

A recent multi-institutional study into a (note: not the) cause of aging has a revealed a specific cellular failure that may be reversible. According to the study, as communication between the mitochondria and nucleus degrades throughout the lifecycle of a cell, the overall health of the cell deteriorates as well – as does the health and function of the organs of the animal in question (in this case, mice). Essentially, this is a root cause of what we mean by “getting old.” The vitality of the cells deteriorates over time, until they simply fail.

Researchers found that by increasing a naturally-occurring molecular component (NAD) that facilitates communication within the cell, cellular function can be restored almost immediately, essentially reversing the cellular aging process – if the NAD levels are replenished early enough. Muscle tissue samples taken from two-year-old lab mice resembled that of six-month-old mice after only one week of NAD therapy. Further long-term studies are planned to see if other mitochondrial disorders can be reversed, including diabetes.

At first glance, this seems to be a rather incredible discovery, and we’ll keep you posted as this develops.
